Why does my dog need a dog bed?

Comfort and Security

One of the most important items that both you and your dog needs is a safe and comfortable place to sleep during the night, nap during the day and just retreat to when your dog needs some time alone and needs a sense of safety and security. A dog bed is a place where you dog can feel at home, part of the family and be able to relax, knowing they are in the right place and will not get told off.

Protect the furniture

A dog bed will give your dog a dedicated place to sleep and relax away from the household beds and furniture. This will protect your furniture from damage and leave that layer of dog hair that seems to be left around the house in one place making it much easier to clean and keep your house tidy.

Doggy health

A good dog bed will provide your dog with a comfortable place to sleep. It should cushion your dog’s bones and joints which will become even more important as your dog gets older. When this happens, you may look to alternate beds that are designed for arthritis in older dogs. Injured can occur if you dog is jumping up on furniture and high beds. Small dogs can fall while larger dogs can get back injuries from constantly jumping up onto furniture.

What makes a good dog bed?

Dogs sleep differently and like different things in a dog bed, but some of the important features to look for include:

Washable

Your dog will spend a lot of time in their bed and it is good to know how easy it is to clean. Not only will your dog bring in dirt, leaves and sticks but all sorts of smells, fur and potentially fleas. An outdoor bed is generally made from a more robust material like shade cloth, canvas or similar thick material. These can be cleaned outside with a stiff brush, detergent and the garden hose. If you have a soft bed topper or cushion consider getting an cushion cover that you can easily put in the washing machine to keep clean. Many inner cushions can also be put in the washing machine too. After washing hang the dog bed out to dry completely. If left damp it will just maintain that wet doggy smell that you are trying to get rid of. If you live in a nice sunny location, there is nothing like natural sunlight to dry your dog bed and make it fresh and clean for your pooch.

Cushion and insulation

We all like a nice comfy bed so why wouldn't your dog. Find a dog bed that has a nice cushion for your dog. This is particularly important for older dogs who may be suffering from arthritis or are just starting to get tired and weary. A good cushion will also provide insulation from harsh temperatures. If you dog sleeps outside the insulation will provide protection from cold or hot ground. I like a bed that has the filling stitched into place, like quilting, as this stops the filling from bunching up on one side and reducing the cushioning effect fro my dog.

Size

Although many dogs like to sleep curled up and cosy on cold winter night, dogs also need to be able to stretch out to get comfortable or to cool down if it gets hot.

Before buying a dog bed, measure your dog stretched out to get the right size. I thought I have bought a bed that was too large last time but turned out to be just right. My dog loves to stretch out, get comfy. As a general rule, measure your dog stretched out and add 6 - 12 inches to get the correct size.

Design

If you dog likes to sleep curled up in a ball, consider getting a ‘nest’ looking bed so that your dog feels cosy and comfortable. Some larger dogs like to lay down with their head flat on the mat. In this case consider a bed that is more like a padded mat or mattress. My dog loves to sleep with his head hanging off the edge or over the edge of the couch or bed. I get him a ‘nest’ style bed that he can hang his head over the cushion. Weird, I know!

Quality

The old saying, you get what you pay for is often true and although you don’t have to pay a fortune, make sure you get a dog bed made from good quality, durable materials. My dog sleeps inside so his bed is protected from the weather but it has lasted years.

Do I need to wash my dog's bed

Washing your dog's bed is very important for not only keep dirt and smells away but all sort of creepy crawlys that might be attracted to your dog. Here are some facts about dirty dog beds from PetMD.

Domestic animals carry diseases-causing organisms including bacterial, viral, parasitic and fungal species, according to the International Scientific Forum on Home Hygiene (IFH).

Although your pet may not seem ill, infections can be passed from animals to people when you pet their fur or come in contact with their feces, vomit, saliva, urine or other bodily discharges, and many of these disease-causing organisms can live in the environment—including on your dog’s bed—for up to 12 months without a host.

How to wash a dog's bed

As a rule, wash your dog's bed each week but this may also depend on your dogs activity level, location of play time and the amount of dirt, mud, sticks and smelly things that you dog may roll in.

PetMD says that all pet bedding—including any blankets or cushion covers a pet may come in contact with—should be laundered at a temperature of at least 140 degrees Fahrenheit using detergent and chlorine bleach, if the fabric can stand it, said Sally Bloomfield, an honorary professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. If you don't know the temperature, choose the highest temperature setting to help kill as many germs as possible.

And for pets with sensitive skin, opt for a natural detergent and an extra rinse cycle. Dry your pet’s bed at the highest possible temperature setting, being careful to hang-dry fill or matting so that they don’t clump in the dryer.

How long will my dog bed last

This will depend on how much your dog uses their bed and how the bed is treated. Some dogs love to carry their beds around with them. Some outdoor dog bed are subject to the elements and some dogs love to put everything they find in their bed including sticks, toys, food. These things may reduce the time that the dog bed lasts. Look out for stitching and fabric damage, insulation loss or reduced cushion or just general wear and tear. These will be indicator of when it is time to get a new bed for your dog.

Why does my dog chew his dog bed?

I cannot buy my terrier soft or poor quality toys as he will demolish them in minutes if not seconds. For some reason, he has never chewed or eaten his dog bed. He perhaps understand that this is his safe place and likes it in one piece.

Not so for some dogs. Some are real chewers and it is a challenge getting a dog bed that will survive these dogs. The best that I can recommend is going for a chew proof dog beds that uses super tough material like a heavy woven, rip-stop, ballistics style fabric. Look for a bed that does not have attachments that you dog can get a hold of to start the destruction. No, this is not 100% guaranteed but will stop 90% of aggressive chewers in their tracks. Further to that is to focus on training, try to find a dog trainer that can help with this.

Dogs tend to chew their beds for a few reasons including:

  • Stress,
  • Boredom
  • Age.
  • Lack of exercise.

If you can address the underlying issue, you may be able to tackle the bed chewing behaviour. Way to distract your dog from chewing include tough chew toys, food reward toys, music or TV on in the background, mind games, lost of exercise and training.
