Firstly, let's address those people who just don't understand why dogs wear sweaters. There are those who like to dress up their dogs for photo opportunities and fun birthday costumes and, hey, why not!
For me, it is more about protecting our little furry friends from the elements. Yes, our dogs have fur, but sometimes this just isn't enough when dogs are living in cold climates. Your dog's ability to stay warm may also depend on their size, body weight and age.
So lets talk about what make the best knitted dog sweater.
Does your dog need a sweater?
Traditionally dogs would have adapted to their environments over many hundred of years. With the easy of travel today and our abilities to move around the globe so freely, dogs are now being taken to climates that they are traditionally not accustomed to.
Dogs that come from colder climates like Huskies, Malamutes or German shepherd or many mountain dogs tend to have a thicker coats. Many of them have double coats, made up of a soft insulative undercoat and a thicker coarser outer protective coat.
Dogs from warmer climates tend to be lean and have a thinner single layer coat with no insulative undercoat like a Chihuahua, Saluki or Greyhound.
Older dogs or sick dogs may have trouble maintaining body weight, body temperature or fur quality. There are even some conditions that make a dog loose fur, like mange or Cushings. These dogs will need some extra care and help to keep warm.
Regarless of history, some dogs are just comfortable being outside or lying in a frosty field while others prefer to sleep curled up in front of the fireplace.
Other dogs may be telling you that they do not want to go outside. Look for signs like your dog shivering, curling up to keep warm or just being very reluctant to follow you outside.
It is really up to you and your dog, as to whether you think he needs a sweater to cope with the elements. If you think your dog is getting cold, get your dog a nice warm sweater to help keep him cosy and comfortable.
... and there is no need for your dog to look drab with the selection of cool, trendy and oh so fashionable doggy sweaters available.
When not to give your dog a sweater
If your dog is from a colder climate, like the Huskies and Mountain dogs mentioned above a sweater may make your dog uncomfortable and could potentially cause your dog to overheat.
What to consider when buying a doggy sweater?
Firstly, check the sizing chart. Our dogs come in so many shapes and sizes so make sure you measure your dog accurately. You are looking for a comfortable fit which is not too tight and not too loose so that it hangs off your dog and gets caught on things. Your dog should be able to move comfortably and unrestricted. Your dog will still need to pee while wearing his jacket so check this if you have a boy dog.
