Find out how rawhide chews are poisoning your dog

Do you know which rawhide is poisoning your dog? But first, lets learn more about rawhide.

What is Rawhide?

The rawhide that we give to our dogs to chew is made from dried animal skin. The Rawhide chew is a hard dried animal skin that slowly softens with your dog drool as he chews. Most dogs love a rawhide because your dogs are instinctively attracted to animal products.Rawhide is high in protein, low in fat, and has fewer calories per ounce than a typical dog biscuit. That means you can satisfy your pet with a healthy treat that won’t add to its weight.

Ok, let’s work this back…. Leather is a by-product of the beef industry and rawhide is a by-product of the leather industry. So perhaps it’s a by-by-product.

Why give your dog rawhide?

All dogs need to chew. It’s a natural instinct. Chewing can provide your dog stimulation and help relieve anxiety. Especially with puppies, treats like rawhide bones can be a great substitute for your leather shoes and your furniture.

Chewing on rawhide is good for your dogs teeth as plaque gets scraped away, controlling tartar buildup, and maintaining gum health. Chewing reduces bad breath, keeps teeth whiter, and prevents gum disease which, if left untreated, can seriously affect the health of your dog.

It relaxes your pet. For older, less active dogs, rawhide bones and chews are among the best treats you can provide. It gives them a non-destructive outlet to release pent-up energy by letting them do what they love to do, chew!

Where does rawhide come from?

Tanning is the process where leather is treated to preserve it so that the leather will not decompose and can be made into luxury products. A natural hide is too thick to be used for most leather product so a tannery will split the hide into various thicknesses. The inside split, the split closest to the flesh of the animal is where the rawhide comes from. Besides dog chews, rawhide may be used for lower quality leathers, suede or drumskins.

How is rawhide made?

Normally, cattle hides are dehydrated and preserved, usually in salt and shipped from the slaughterhouses to the tannery for processing

An animal hide is cleaned on the inside to remove any remaining membranes and flesh with scrapers, knives or nowadays often mechanically. The upper side will then have the hair removed usually by using an Ash-Lye solution or a Lime solution. The hide will usually soak for approximately 3 days in the solution then scraped clean. This process may be repeated until completely clean.

This process is highly caustic therefor the hide needs to be washed, often in bleach to remove all the caustic and sanitise the hide.

To remove all traces of the lime solution and to sanitize the rawhide, commercial makers then rinse the hides in a bleach solution. The commercially useful hides then continue through the tanning process while the rawhide for doggy chews does not.

Good quality, US rawhide manufacturers, usually transport these hides in refrigerated trucks to the wharehouse. The rawhide chew shape is created while the hide is still wet. The chews are then dried. Some are sent for “smoking” to further enhance the flavour.

What rawhides chews not to buy?

In the USA, there are more and more quality doggy rawhide manufacturers that care about the health or our pets and make the rawhides with as few harsh chemicals as possible.

In the US, however, the rawhide is classified as a “pet toy” and not a consumable food item, therefore some manufacturers, many from overseas are able to produce and import rawhide that is processed with harsh leather producing chemicals and import these into the US market.

Many of these commercial mass produced rawhide products come from Mexico, South America and China. It is difficult for us to know the quality, cleanliness and processing standards of these rawhide manufacturers.  The rawhide chews poisoning your dog is most likely from imported chews that are not made with fresh hides and is often made as cheaply and quickly as possible.

What is a quality rawhide?

With this knowledge and the desire for us caring dog owners to only give our dogs healthy, quality, products only buy rawhide that is made in the USA by quality caring rawhide manufacturers.

A quality rawhide should be cleaned, washed, and refrigerated during transportation to the doggy rawhide manufacturer. It should not need harsh chemical processing and preservatives.

How often should I give rawhide to my dog?

This may depend on the dog. Some dogs don’t chew much or aren't aggressive chewers. My terrier pup was a heavy chewer so I gave him a rawhide chew every day. This saved my furniture, gave him something to cut his teeth on kept him occupied for ages.

A good rule of thumb is to let your pet chew a rawhide toy an hour a day. Give your dog or puppy other chewing toys as well. Hard rubber toys are great for an aggressive chewer.

Chewing is a completely normal activity and is needed to help them cut their new teeth and develop strong jaws. Rather than punish puppies for chewing the wrong things, give your dog a rawhide treat to keep him occupied.

Make sure you supervise your puppy while he chews his rawhide. Don’t give him too much so that it upsets his puppy stomach.

Is rawhide safe for my dog?

Rawhide is one of the most natural things a dog can chew on. Dogs have been chewing it for thousands of years.

But not all rawhide today is the same. Rawhide chews made in the U.S.A. with high quality U.S.A. beef hide are cleaner, thicker and more durable. That means your dog can spend more time “wetting it down” and tearing off smaller pieces than with other rawhide treats.

According to Webmd These are the most common rawhide risks:

  • Contamination - Rawhide chews, particularly those made overseas, can contain trace amounts of toxic chemicals. It is possible for Salmonella or E. coli contamination.

  • Digestive irritation - Some dogs or puppies can be sensitive to rawhide or other substances used in their manufacture. This can cause problems, including diarrhea. Keep an eye on your dog when you first introduce him to rawhide.

  • Choking or blockages - Puppies and dogs can choke on rawhide bones or they can cause a blockage. This may occur if your dog swallows large pieces of rawhide.

If you see any of the following signs, contact your veterinarian:

  • Gagging

  • Regurgitation

  • Repeated swallowing

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea, with or without blood

  • Fever

  • Lack of energy

  • Signs of pain

  • Refusal to eat or weight loss
